He also paid tribute to PWB Health s partners Highland Innovation Centre, for development of the Intellectual Property and patents, and Wideblue, for their design and optical expertise.

PWB Health was established earlier this year and their first product, the BreastLight, is on course to be launched in the summer of 2008. The BreastLight has already undergone extensive market testing with over 800 women. In addition to concept testing, well woman nurses have used the BreastLight on approximately 250 women in clinic and an additional 100 women have evaluated the product in home user trials.

The principle of the product is that bright red light is transmitted through the breast tissue. The woman holds the BreastLight against their breast in a darkened room and looks at the transmitted light. The red light is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the blood, which allows the woman to observe the internal structure of her breast and look for any abnormalities or changes over time.

According to PWB Health Managing Director, Steve Soden:
"This award is a credit to everyone s hard work to develop the BreastLight as an aid to women s home breast awareness routine. Response from all the studies so far has been very favourable with women instinctively finding the BreastLight easy to use as part of their regular breast awareness routine. Indeed, 60% of women who admitted to never checking their breasts felt that they would be encouraged to do so with a BreastLight."

Editor s notes:

PWB Health was founded in 2007 to develop and market a range of innovative personal wellbeing products that have been designed for home use.

PWB Health s first product, the BreastLight, is on track to be brought to market for the summer of 2008.

In the development of the BreastLight, PWB Health has worked with partners Highland Innovation Centre Ltd (HICL), with respect to the Intellectual Property and patent, and Wideblue Ltd, for their design and optical expertise.

Breast cancer is the number one health concern for women in the UK.
